Technology Acceleration Workshop

Whether you are a start-up company or a mature business trying to accelerate growth, this interactive workshop will offer insights and pathways to improve your present practices for growth.

In a half day, we will help you learn to:

  • rapidly acquire new technology to solve product or process problems;
  • develop market intelligence about the relevance of your new technology, and understand key market barriers and opportunities; and
  • get new products to market faster, increase new product development capacity, and get better market results.
This session will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will be held at CTCPA, 716 Brook Street, Rocky Hill, CT.


Technology Scouting
Have you been trying to solve a problem and know the technology solution must be out there somewhere, but your company does not have the skills or resources to find that solution? This session will introduce Technology Scouting, a systematic and comprehensive approach to searching outside your company’s normal channels to find viable solutions to your specific technology needs. The workshop will explain Technology Scouting and provide realworld small manufacturer examples.

Technology Driven Market Intelligence (TDMI)
Is your company considering launching a new product or entering a new market? Do you wish you had better real-world validated insight into the specific barriers and opportunities – both technical and market – that exist to help your company make better strategic decisions? This session will provide an introduction to TDMI, a focused approach to market intelligence which directly considers the benefits and market impacts related to your company’s specific technology-based asset (e.g., idea, product, process). The workshop will provide real-world small manufacturer examples.

Lean Product Development
This session provides an introductory overview and case studies of a Lean Product Development Process. Lean Product Design and Lean Product Development help companies overcome time to market, portfolio management, resource capacity, product development risk, and new product cost-challenges. Designed to be easily scaled to a firm’s size and need, companies from small start-ups to large mature entities, have benefitted from applying Lean design and development insights and tools to transform their product design and development activity into a low waste, high value, process.

Workshop Presenters

Thomas Culver
Mr. Culver has worked for RTI International, a leading global non-profit research institute, for over 10 years and has over 15 years of industry experience in advanced technology development and commercialization. Mr. Culver has developed, organized, and taught nationwide workshops on Technology Scouting processes and TDMI, and has delivered Open Innovation solutions to Fortune 100 companies and large government clients. He routinely provides technology scouting, licensing, technical and market opportunity assessments, and strategic advising services to commercial, government, and university clients.

Edmund Maier
Edmund (Ed) Maier is a graduate of the University of Rochester with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He has over 30 years of experience in technology, product and process development. Over 12 of those years were with automotive OEMs and suppliers – both domestic and overseas. Ed has been extensively engaged in leading product, technology, advanced manufacturing, and advanced composites development teams. Ed also founded and profitably grew a startup company for 10 years engaged in the invention, manufacture and marketing of medical devices, and following its sale ran marketing and engineering for the combined companies. He then started a consultancy to help companies improve innovation and product development skills and processes, and works with the NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) to develop and implement Business Growth services for companies across the US.  In this role, he is helping companies create innovative, high-value, new product and market opportunities.
