CONNSTEP’s recent Plant Layout, 5S and Cell Design project at C.Cowles & Co. was an important backdrop for Governor Malloy’s August 19, 2014 press conference. President Bonnie Del Conte had the pleasure of speaking at the event, and Laurel Suchecki, the project’s lead Business Growth Consultant, gave the Governor a tour of the process improvements in the North Haven factory.

CONNSTEP’s work entailed documenting the current state of C. Cowles’ plant in Long Meadow, MA and then making process improvements that would be instituted when the factory moved to North Haven. The objective was to create more efficient operations in manufacturing assemblies to:
• improve employee productivity
• reduce redundancies
• create work cells
• improve overall product flow
• improve lead times

The goal was to enable the product to be built within two to three days of receiving an order. The University of New Haven also partnered with C. Cowles and CONNSTEP by providing interns that acted as manufacturing engineers. These interns followed the processes put in place by CONNSTEP, and demonstrated their effectiveness as improvements were continuously implemented throughout the project.
