There are many overarching definitions of change management, but it can essentially be distilled down to being a structured approach to implementing change in an organization. For manufacturers, it often involves identifying opportunities for improvement in their operations and processes, then planning how to implement and sustain changes associated with those improvements.

Manufacturers face several challenges when implementing change management in the context of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and Industry 4.0. Some of the key challenges include:

Technological Complexity:

Implementing AI, IoT, and Industry 4.0 technologies involves complex systems and integration processes. Manufacturers may struggle with understanding and managing the technical intricacies of these technologies, including interoperability, data management, cybersecurity, and compatibility with existing infrastructure.

The manufacturer’s leadership team may also have to undergo a cultural and philosophical shift to effect changes throughout the organization.

The involvement of the entire workforce ensures that processes and structures are in place and aligned with the overall organizational vision. Continuously checking for barriers or people who are resisting change will minimize disruptions. Rewarding people for endorsing and contributing to change and supporting new processes can be beneficial.

Manufacturers should prioritize change management efforts to maximize the benefits of AI, IoT, and Industry 4.0 technologies while minimizing disruptions and risks.

Managing resistance to change, and mitigating risks associated with change, can be addressed by empowering employees and communicating what their roles and responsibilities are in any given process improvement. Through the systematic approach and application of knowledge, tools, and resources to deal with change associated with the adoption of emerging technologies, manufacturers will grow, be competitive, and succeed.
