Establish a Culture of Quality with the Quality Essentials Program
CONNSTEP’s Quality Essentials Program is being offered to address the growing need to enhance the knowledge of quality principles among skilled manufacturing workers.
This overarching quality program takes place on five consecutive Thursdays beginning April 25, 2019 from 9 am – 3 pm. Includes lunch and light refreshments.
All manufacturing personnel including new or existing quality technicians who, as part of their jobs, maintain company quality standards by approving incoming materials, in-process production, and finished products.
Here is the course curriculum for each class:
Learn the core professional skills relevant to working in a manufacturing environment, including effective communication and conflict management. These skills apply to Quality as it plays a key role in manufacturing, implemented at multiple levels in multiple departments within an organization.
In this workshop, you’ll learn about the key quality workplace skills including effective communication, working in teams, dealing with and resolving conflict, and working safely. You will also assess your own workplace skills and identify areas in which you can improve.
• Identify skills, qualities, and characteristics to successfully address quality issues
• List methods for communicating effectively
• List best practices for giving a presentation
• Explain best practices for working with others
• Assess your own personality and explore how it affects your workplace preferences
• Identify the types of diversity commonly encountered in the workplace and describe techniques for working in this environment
• Describe techniques for dealing with conflict in the workplace
• Explain, in general terms, how to stay safe at work
PRINT READING FOR MANUFACTURING
Learn information and skills needed to interpret prints commonly encountered in manufacturing quality control environments.
This workshop provides an introduction to reading and interpreting engineering prints and technical drawings used for manufacturing. You will practice what you have learned through multiple realistic hands-on activities.
• Describe the basic structure and elements of a manufacturing print
• Describe and identify the types of lines used on prints and their purpose
• Describe and recognize the views typically included on prints
• Explain how dimensions are indicated on prints
• Explain the purpose and contents of assembly drawings
• Recognize and identify symbols included on drawings, including screw threads, holes, and surface finishes
• Why we communicate with drawings in manufacturing
• Lines used on prints
• Print sizes
• Title block, including scale, tolerances, and revisions
• Views and visualization
• Section views and their types
• Dimensioning, including placement, angular and circular, and dual dimensioning
• Assembly drawings, including application blocks
• Screw thread representations, including form and class
• Machining specifications, including holes, edges, necks, and undercuts
• Surface texture symbols and specifications
MEASUREMENT FOR MANUFACTURING
Learn information and skills needed to perform measurements in manufacturing quality control environments using tools such as micrometers and gauge blocks. Taking measurements is a key quality personnel task in manufacturing.
In this workshop, you’ll learn why measurements are important in manufacturing and how to properly use rulers, calipers, micrometers, gauge blocks, and other measurement instruments to take linear and angular measurements.
• Explain why measurements are performed in manufacturing
• Describe the two measurement systems in use today
• Explain the difference between a dimension and a tolerance
• Demonstrate how to use a ruler, calipers, and micrometer to measure
• Explain the purpose of gauge blocks
• Explain the purpose and types of go/no-go gauges
• Explain the purpose of a gauge R&R study
• Explain the purpose of validation and calibration of measurement tools
• Explain the purpose and functionality of other common measurement tools used in manufacturing, including dial indicators, height gauges, scales, and coordinate measurement machines
Learn the basics of Quality Management Systems including ISO9001:2015, AS9100 Rev D and IATF16949:2016 and audit principles used when conducting audits of quality systems adhering to these standards. Many companies today are registered to one or more Quality Management Systems standards.
In this class, you will learn the critical elements of the ISO9001:2015, AS9100 Rev D and IATF16949:2016 standards. In addition, basics of auditing will be covered to make you aware of what to expect when you participate in an audit. This course will only provide a basic understanding of the content of the standards and auditing and will not be adequate to be considered a competent Internal Auditor of any standard.

• Review the core elements of each standard

• Developing an audit plan
• Conducting an audit
• Writing nonconformance’s
• Writing an audit report
Discover Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), A3, and root cause analysis (RCA) to effectively solve problems in the workplace.
In this workshop, participants will learn about the Plan, Do, Check, Act problem-solving method. In addition, participants will learn about problem-solving tools and activities, including A3, root cause analysis, process mapping, cause and effect diagrams, error proofing, and others. Using a variety of real-world scenarios and hands-on activities, participants will practice implementing problem-solving methods and tools.
• Define “problem” and identify problem-solving skills
• Identify barriers to problem solving
• List the benefits of using a structured problem-solving method
• Describe the goals of each Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) step and activities that take place during each step
• Define “root cause” and distinguish between root causes and symptoms
• Document PDCA activities on an A3 template.
Learn the basics of quality improvement, quality audits, and the seven quality tools.
Quality is a significant concern of all companies and organizations. In order to stay in business, companies must offer a quality product or service that meets or exceeds the needs of the customer. All employees, including line workers, inspectors, and office workers, affect quality.
In this workshop, you’ll learn more about what quality is and why it is important as well as some key quality terms, how to create and use tools which organizations commonly employ to monitor and improve quality, and information about quality audits.
• Define “quality”
• Explain how employees affect quality
• Define key quality terms, including QMS, TQM, specification, defect, and variation
• Describe, create, and interpret the following quality tools: process map, run chart, histogram, check sheet, Pareto chart, fishbone diagram, and scatter diagram
• Describe the purpose of quality audits and explain in general terms the audit process

50% Funding is available for eligible CT manufacturers with under 2000 employees, sending full-time employees from CT facilities only. Discount of $300 for multiple participants from same company will be applied. Payment in full at time of registration.
