5 Ways Your Business Can Benefit from an Energy Use Assessment

CONNSTEP partners with Eversource and United Illuminating to provide an Energy Use Assessment program (EUA) that helps companies immediately identify areas within their facility that can benefit from targeted energy reduction. Low or no-cost fixes help business owners easily claim 10% or more in savings, a quick way to free up cash to invest in new products, IT, equipment, workforce recruiting, training and retaining among other corporate initiatives.

Together, with our partners Loureiro Engineering, we identified five ways your business can benefit from an EUA based on what we’ve seen while assessing manufacturers around the state:

  1. A savings of 15% – 20% on your total site’s utility budget. If your company incurs about $100,000 in electric spend, this translates to $15,000 – $20,000. Keep in mind each facility will be different but these savings are often what business owners incur.
  2. A two-year, simple payback with all items combined after incentives.
  3. The cost of the assessment is usually offset. Eversource/United Illuminating covers 50% while the remaining half can be recovered once recommendations are implemented.
  4. You understand where and why energy is used within your business – knowledge is power (literally)!
  5. You’ll receive metrics so you can see how you can continuously improve (if you do X, you will see the results in the metrics).

Operating your company as efficiently as possible should be a priority but often times a fresh set of eyes is the only way to see what’s draining your company. Your company’s utility spend isn’t going away but a small investment to assess what’s impacting your utility bills will help you see a portion of that money returned within the very first year!

The EUA goes well beyond basic assessments and the typical light bulb exchanging. Assessors search for, and quantify, any abnormal energy use and non-value-added energy use, literally examining every kilowatt-hour and BTU used in your facility. You learn how to eliminate these and improve the efficiency of this energy’s generation and use.

Some typical production areas that offer opportunities to save include:

  • Compressed air
  • Lighting
  • Manufacturing processes including heating processes
  • HVAC systems
  • Understanding on/off peak times within your operations
  • Running certain processes/operations to maximize efficiency
  • Knowing when to batch or not to batch

Plymouth Spring of Bristol, Connecticut expects to save about $13,000 a year according to Gerard Barrieau, Vice President. “We repaired 22 air leaks so far and are aiming to address all of them,” he says. To date, they have reduced the capacity of their main air compressor, are reviewing lighting options and have installed monitors on all of their Remote Terminal Units along with new thermostats to help manage their demand requirements.

It’s important to note that even if a company feels they have the best systems, there’s always something that can be done to reduce usage. For example, sites may have spent a lot of money adding a new air compressor system. However, they may not be doing everything they can to manage the system and its air use. Despite the equipment being new, there are still opportunities where maintenance matters.
