The Shingo Prize

The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence in Connecticut is administered by CONNSTEP, Inc., Connecticut’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership, and is open to Connecticut companies, divisions and plants that demonstrate excellence in manufacturing and business processes leading to outstanding quality, cost, delivery and business results.  The application process itself serves as a valuable vehicle for improvement.  Applicants receive feedback on possible improvements and suggestions for deployment.

Transformation Model for Operational Excellence

The Shingo Prize Model is based on the Lean management approach and model taught by Shigeo Shingo.  Shingo, a management consultant and practicing engineer, recognized vital management philosophies and shared them through his many books. 

His teachings describe three levels of business improvement, which we refer to as levels of transformation:  Principles, Systems and Tools & Techniques.  Shingo grasped that true innovation is not achieved by superficial imitation of the isolated random use of Tools & Techniques and Systems (know how), but instead required the "know why" or understanding of underlying Principles. 

The Shingo Prize Model is a pictorial representation of how a company progresses along a Lean transformation journey.  It is designed to help managers identify where the company is on the Lean journey and to assess the breadth and depth of Lean implementation already in place within the organization. 

The model is comprised of four dimensions:  Enablers, Process-Focused Improvement, Enterprise Thinking and Business Results, to which all Lean transformation must lead.
