Effective Steering Committees
Steering committees create and provide the infrastructure for learning, implementation and the sustainability of new behaviors within organizations, requiring a membership of decision makers.
As new behaviors become the norm of a continuous improvement culture, the steering committee must avoid becoming another layer of management and develop ways to refresh its membership through welcoming and mentoring associates from throughout the organization.
These same steering committees also run the risk of becoming merely venues for reviewing suggestions, not using their influence to address the greater issues of Lean knowledge and application throughout the organization. Some steering committees tend to lose steam, and members, due to wastes in their own processes.
