Happy New Year… You Can Make It Happen

December 23, 2015

by Mark Paggioli

It’s the time of year when we’re able to come up for air, look back on our accomplishments, and look ahead to our goals and aspirations for the new year. In the business world, this means that the holiday season and the advent of 2016 is a rare opportunity for planning, reflection, and honest self-examination.

As you consider your results from 2015, your goals for the past year are your best measure of your performance. And planning for a better year ahead may be as simple as making sure that your goals are SMART goals, an acronym meaning:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

So… how did you do in 2015? Did you achieve YOUR goals? Were you able to:

  • increase sales?
  • find customers?
  • improve your bottom line?
  • begin grooming future leaders?
  • remove chronic problems that contribute to CEO burnout?
  • implement processes for finding and training people?

Our clients have told us that they took on too many priorities this year, and 2016 will be the year to more deliberately select only one or two of these critical areas and begin chipping away at them. After reflecting on the past year and thinking about what the experiences of 2015 mean for you, you’ll have to determine where your primary focus should be as an owner or business leader.

It can be daunting to be responsible for the far-flung needs of even the smallest of organizations. But while there’s no shortage of demands for your time and attention, you can certainly learn from your real-world experiences in 2015 and select one or two key focus areas that can bring you to a better place.

You don’t have to accept the circumstances that made 2015 challenging for you. As you begin to focus on the most critical and realistic areas for performance improvement, you need a blueprint for the plan to realize those improvements. Change is never easy, and the most difficult part of any process can often be the initial planning and definition stages.
